The Next Civil War?
The Civil Wars exhume all of the buried sorrow and resentment of a breakup in their hauntingly beautiful song “Poison and Wine.” The song embodies the very idea of the desperation involved in attempting to save that relationship you know is dead.
Although the song may lack lyrical genius, listeners cannot help but fall in love with the pain expressed in John Paul White and Joy Williams’ voices as they counter each other until finally coming together in chorus singing, “I don’t love you, but I always will.” The eloquent music of the guitar and piano swell behind them, embodying all of their grief.
Their album, “Poison and Wine EP” is available on iTunes. Although “Poison and Wine” rests on a pedestal, receiving praises from Taylor Swift as truly exquisite, songs like “Dance Me to the End of Love” and “Barton Hallow” still contain their one of kind presence.
